Bachman's Sparrow
Named after a colleague of John James Audobon, the Bachman's (pronounced BACK-man's ) Sparrow is a sought after year round resident of Florida. Their song is a welcome sound for many birders visiting the habitat of these secretive sparrows.
Though distinct when close, their song can be mistaken for that of an Eastern Towhee or Carolina Wren when heard at a distance.
Birders visiting Florida are often challenged to find these birds. Their habitat provides ample hiding places and can be difficult to navigate.
Those not intimately familiar with Bachman's Sparrow habitat may find themselves running through thick uneven terrain only to find they are playing hide and go seek with these often elusive birds.
